Here is a picture of Parker's video collection. This is very special to him. He loves his videos and he loves it when I put them in order. (Parker has autism, for anyone just reading this.) He loves to go to consignment stores, thrift stores and video stores to find the ones he likes. They are mostly vehicle, Barney, Elmo, Maisy and Blues Clues videos. I wanted to post this today because it is something Parker loves and it is something that makes him special.
I also posted this picture because movies help him when he is stressed. They help him when he's getting his hair cut, visiting a relative or taking a long car ride. He can get through most family get-togethers if he takes along his portable dvd player.

Cool photo idea! I think when you have a child with Autism, their special thing, whatever it is means so much more than
"normal" people understand. Maybe not?!???? But that's how I see it!

Julie, that would be great if you had some you didn't want anymore. Maybe we could even trade. Is there anything special Daniel is in to? Parker has quite a few movies that he doesn't want and a big variety. Let me know. P.s.-I agree with their things seeming more special, especially the way they really get into things.
I love seeing things that are so integral in the lives of special kids. Makes you stop and think a bit and not take everything for granted.
Cool picture. It's great that Parker has found his special coping mechanism. I'm always amazed at how resourceful our kids with ASD are at figuring out what they need. We just have to listen to them.
We haven't hit the video stage with Frog yet. He likes to watch TV in short bursts but gets overwhelmed by the visual. The exceptions are ballroom dancing, football, and Polar Express - something about that style of animation - he is also enthralled by the Nasonex Bee :0).

I swear, I'm going to take a picture of my son's video collection! He has a few Blues clues and Elmo, but his main focus is the Baby Einstein series and the So Smart series. He has multiples of each on VHS and DVD- he has around 6 copies of Baby Mozart, and can tell you the differences between them (usually it's in the details of the packaging, or the color of writing on the label). It amazes me.
Jaysen uses his videos to "regulate" too. You can usually gauge what level his anxiety is, just by how many video tapes/DVD's he's taking with him.
We often order them through Amazon online ('cuz you know your just can't find VHS anywhere any more!), and it's the first thing he looks for at garage sales.
The biggest thing I struggle with is containing all of them! We're currently using a bookshelf too, but he's always playing with the tapes, so they rarely make their way back on the shelf. Any suggestions?
Melody- would your son be willing to come over and put Jaysen's tapes "in order"? ;)
Anyway, it's nice to know there's another "video kid" out there. People usually think Jaysen just watches them all the time- they don't understand that they're an integral part of his life.

That's awesome! My youngest loves DVD's too, he prefers to carry them around rather than actually watch them. His collection (or rather, it was his brothers' collection that he confiscated) is mostly Thomas and Baby Einstein.
